Blog #1- Frontline Video
I stumbled across this great TV show highlighting how kids are growing up ONLINE. I thought part of the program was effective at highlighting some of the challenges teachers have with how different kids are in this new digital age. Please click on the link and watch ONE section, "A Revolution in Classrooms and Social Life" and share your thoughts on this blog with the rest of your class. Please focus your answers on the following prompts: "How are YOU as a teacher going to deal with the fact that kids are different these days and even at a very young age are used to being online? Do you think teachers have a responsibility to add technologies to support learning in the classroom? Do teachers have an obligation to help students understand appropriate uses of the Internet?"

In order to keep the children interested a teacher in todays world will have to integrade technology. The teachers will have to show students how to use technology in a creative way in order to teach certain things in class. Teachers have to show how to use the internet as a tool and not just to use the internet at something that is used for entertainment. When I am in the classroom, I will show students how to better use technology in order to learn. I am also a strong believer in using books and not just technology.
ReplyDeleteI think that the fact children will have a pretty good grasp on technology is both a positive and a negative. On one hand, the we won't have to waste as much time in class going over the very basics of using a computer. However this means that we will also have to maintain a very current knowledge base in order to keep up with these more advanced learners. Since students will have a much wider knowledge base, I will incorporate more tech based learning into my everyday teaching. Taking the students down to the computer lab or using the stations in the classroom will be much more common as opposed to sitting and taking notes, or filling out a worksheet. I do think that teachers have a responsibility to put as much technology in the class as much as possible. However, teachers can only provide as much technology resources as possible, because their administrators may not be able to provide them with enough or up to date resources. I also think that teachers most ceartinly have a responsibility to teach students how to use the internet properly. As teachers it is our responsibility to give our students the tools that they will need in the future, throughout higher levels of education.
ReplyDeleteI think as a teacher, I'm definitely going to have to be used to the fact that most of my students, if not all of them, are going to be more technology savvy then I ever was. It's strange to think that students are learning about technology earlier and earlier, but it is reality.
ReplyDeleteI think teachers do have a responsibility to include technology in the classroom. It is now more widely used than ever, and I believe it helps students to learn. I feel students are more likely to pay attention to a lesson if a power point is being used, for example.
I do think teachers have a slight obligation to help students understand appropriate uses of the internet. There is too much distraction in the classroom if students are doing whatever they want on the web when they should be doing a certain assignment. Teachers need to show students what they can and can not or should not do.
Technology is a very important tool in the classroom. Teachers need to ready their students for the real world, where technology is being used all the time, everywhere, everyday.

ReplyDeleteAs a teacher, we are going to have to accept the fact that chlidren these days are exposed to different media then we were. We will also have to accept the fact that in another twenty years, technology will also be completely different.
ReplyDeleteWith children used to being online at a very young age, teachers are going to have to be aware of how to deal with what children are being exposed to. It is something that I am prepared to deal with. Being on the internet is something that is exciting for children to be on, therefore this is a method in which they are eager to learn. Incorporating activities that are on the internet with material that is being learned is one way that the internet needs to be used in the classroom.
Teachers do have a responsibility to incorporate technology in the classroom because this is the kind of society that we live in today. It is no longer an option to be techonlogically knowledgeable.
I feel like there is almost no way around using technology in a classroom in the present and the future without hurting your students in the long run. Technology is very beneficial and can be a good way to teach. I believe that it is important for a teacher to be taught the in’s and out’s of working computers in order to be a step ahead of their students. As in the first clip of the video, the teenager could see his parents monitoring his website use, and he fooled his parents into thinking that he was on an appropriate site when he was not. A teacher need’s to help show their students how to use the basic programs on the computer or when the student gets to college, they will be lost and confused. I am not saying that they need to know everything, but they need to know how to e-mail and type papers. When I am a teacher, I am going to try and limit the amount of computer time my students get. I am sure that from the time they get home to the time they go to bed they will have played on the computer, watched t.v. or played some kind of video game. I will use computers as a way of practicing a new skill instead of teaching one. I also believe that the teacher should be the one instructing and only use computers of a means of reviewing the material and practicing. When it comes to the internet, it is both the teachers and the parent’s responsibility to make sure that children are aware of the risks in being on the wrong websites. I think they should share with the students the consequences and guide them in doing a successful search by using a kid safe search engine.
ReplyDeleteI think teachers have are hard job with students these days with using technology in the classroom because students are far more advanced than their teachers are. It's good for the students to use the Internet because they can look and observe things for an assignment and have a better understanding of than before. But in a way using the Internet students are not able to learn as much by reading because everything is on the computer, like the one boy who used the computer instead of reading the book. It's sad to hear that these kids don't read anymore, but who can blame them when the Internet has done all the work for them. When I become a teacher I'll use technology but I'll also use books. I'm a big believer of learning from books. Teachers do have an obligation to show students how to properly use the Internet when they're in the classroom, but they also have to work with the parents so when the kids are outside of school.
ReplyDeleteI believe that as a teacher I should try my very best to use technology in the classroom to support student learning. I want to use technology in the classroom to benefit my students, not me. If it wasn't my responsibility to educate my students in the classroom to the best of my ability, I would not chose to use technology. I have a difficult time getting to use to using all of the different types of technology.To try and deal with children using technology at a such a young age will be a challenge for me. I will go about it by learning as much as I can about technology, so I will be somewhat up to speed with it. I will try to incorporate as my technology use as I can into my classroom activities.I don't feel that teachers have a full responsibility to teach students appropriate use of the internet. However, I do feel that it is a teacher's responsibility to not allow inappropriate use of the internet while the students are in school.
ReplyDeleteI watched the section on the girl who was "living a double life" one that was normal and happy and the other were she had a really terrible eating disorder. I thought that it was really sad to see that there are websites that encourage girls to have eating disorders and teach them better ways to lose weight. I think that as a teacher I need to be aware of these sites and others that have unhealthy solutions for dealing with problems. I also think that in order to keep the children interested a teacher in todays world will have to integrade technology. ReplyDeleteI watched the video clip, and I thought it was interesting to see the different opinions and points of view from the different teachers. The one male teacher said that in this current time of students in school, the teachers need to be 'entertainers' in a way. We will need to incorporate technology because our students are so involved with media and technology in their everyday home life.

I do feel that we as teachers are going to be somewhat obligated to incorporate technology in our classroom because students need to keep their focus and attention and are more likely to do so with an interactive visual aid, like a smartboard.
As teachers, we need to monitor our students with what they are doing on the web. Many students will abuse their internet priveleges.
I thought it was interesting to hear the teachers opinions on cheating. I agreed with the one male teacher that talks about how it's difficult to tell what is cheating and what is not.
This video clip has a lot of interesting points like a lot of my classmates have said. We have to know that our students are going to know and be able to understand the computer. We are not going to be able to stand up there and just talk and know that they are listening. We have to find ways to keep our students interested. The computer can and will do this. The use of smartboards is probably going to become a big thing by the time we are teachers and we will be able to use these in our classrooms. These interactive boards will keep students focused and make it easier and faster for them to get their answers. This will also help teachers get through topics faster too and make it easier to get all the information we want in to one lesson. We will have to monitor the students and make sure they are not abusing their priveleges. We will have to monitor if they are actually doing the work and not just getting it from the internet. The history teacher that talked about what is cheating and what is not really brings up a good point. I mean, anyone who has a computer can get information on the web. Should we really discourage students trying to find the answers on the web? It brings up a good point. Hopefully, we will have changed our rules to help bring technology in even more in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that teachers have a huge responsibility to add technology in there school because technology is everywhere. Kids need to learn about technology and how to use it. I think that teachers should be obligated to help students understand the uses of the internet, but I think its more of the parents job! For me dealing with kids who know more about the internet than me my be a little difficult, but I already try to understand it. I see it all around me. Especially my 4 year old who knows how to turn it on and search for games. At first i was amazed but I learned to accept the fact the kids are far more advanced now than ever before.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching this video clip, I feel that the teachers have a responsibility in using technology in their classrooms. Technology helps keep the students engaged and interested in the lesson. As a teacher, I feel that I could try to make more online projects and activities for the students to be doing so they are getting that knowledge and work time online. I feel that both teachers and parents (or guardians) have a huge responsibility in teacheing their students or children how to understand and use the internet. If the kids are not advised on how to properly look up a website or idea on the web, inappropriate images or text may come up. The students have to be taught how to search the web so that they can use it to its full potential! I do not have any children, but I picture my neices and nephews in this situation. I would show them how to search for a Case IH tractor online instead of saying go look for a Case tractor on the internet. They will not understand what to do and they could end up on any website.
ReplyDeleteI as a teacher think that it is part of my job to bring in different technoligies to the classroom. Children these days are capable of doing so much more then we sometimes give them credit for. Also, children learn through different types of learing styles. Bringing in different types of media would be good because we can get information acrossed in different ways, which keeps the classroom fresh and fun, not boring. But with that comes another job, we as teachers, need to show students the RIGHT way to use technology. Kids sometimes take advantage of it and take the easy way out, such as cut, copy, paste, which means they actually arent learning anything! So, I thik technology is good, but you have to becareful as to how it is used.
